Cage Mill

The cage mill (also known as a cage mill crusher) is a horizontal impact-type pulverizer designed for high-efficiency size reduction of brittle materials. Unlike hammer mills or chain mills, the cage mill uses two or more concentric cages (rows of steel pins) rotating in opposite directions at high speed. Material enters the center and is flung outward by centrifugal force, being repeatedly impacted by the rotating pins. This unique “impact-and-throw” action delivers a high reduction ratio—up to 40:1—without the need for screens or grates.

    Description

In fertilizer processing, hard clumps or stray stones can quickly destroy traditional crushing elements, leading to frequent blade replacements and costly downtime. Sticky, high-moisture materials such as urea or organic manure often block conventional crushers, while uneven feed results in inconsistent particle size that harms downstream granulation quality. Furthermore, fine grinding typically demands excessive energy, driving up operating costs per ton.

The cage mill directly addresses these difficulties: its wear‑resistant steel pins (cage pins) eliminate the need for blades and offer a much longer service life; the open cage design combined with centrifugal action provides self‑clearing capability, handling up to 15‑20% moisture without clogging; the multi‑row cage structure ensures uniform product size, which can be further adjusted by rotor speed; and all this is achieved at an energy consumption of only 2‑7 Hp per ton — significantly lowering the cost per ton while maintaining reliable, consistent output.

    Applications

    • NPK Compound Fertilizer Production– Pre-crushing of hard urea, MAP, DAP, potash (potassium chloride/sulfate) clumps before granulation.
    • Organic Fertilizer Processing– Breaking down chicken manure pellets, humic acid blocks, and crop residue with moderate moisture.
    • Distillery Grain Processing– Cage mills for distilleries to pulverize dried distillers grains (DDGS) into fine powder for animal feed.
    • Agricultural Limestone & Gypsum– Fine grinding of ag-lime for soil pH adjustment.
    • Chemical & Mineral Industries– Crushing of borax, phosphate rock, sodium bicarbonate, and other friable materials.

    How It Works

The cage mill operates on a simple yet highly effective impact principle:

    • Feed Entry– Material enters the center of the innermost rotating cage.
    • Centrifugal Acceleration– As the cage spins (typically 1,000–2,000 RPM), centrifugal force throws material outward against the stationary or counter-rotating cage pins.
    • Multi-Stage Impact– Each successive row of pins strikes the particles, reducing them further. The opposite rotation of adjacent cages creates intense shear and impact forces.
    • Discharge– Once particles are small enough to pass through the gaps between pins, they exit the bottom of the mill.

    Advantages

High Reduction Ratio – Up to 40:1
Achieve fine particles (as small as 2mm) from 100mm feed in a single pass, reducing the need for multiple crushing stages.
    Handles Wet & Sticky Materials
Unlike hammer mills that clog easily, the open cage design and centrifugal force prevent material buildup. Ideal for urea, organic manure, and other hygroscopic fertilizers (up to 15-20% moisture).
    Lower Operating Cost
Energy consumption of 2-7 Hp per ton – significantly lower than many alternative crushers. No screens to replace, and wear parts (cage pins) are easily replaceable.
Consistent Product Size for Downstream Granulation
Multi-row cage design with counter-rotating cages ensures uniform particle size distribution, improving granulation efficiency and final product quality by up to 20% (based on customer feedback).

    FAQ

What is the maximum moisture content the cage mill can handle?

The SYM cage mill can effectively process materials with surface moisture up to 15-20%. For higher moisture (e.g., 25-30%), we recommend pre-drying or adding a air cannon system (optional) to prevent sticking.

Do I need a concrete foundation for installation?

No. Our cage mill features a flat-base design – just place it on a level workshop floor and connect power. Optional mobile frame with wheels is also available.

What is the typical delivery time?

Standard models are available within 30 working days after deposit confirmation. Customized stainless steel versions require 30-60 days.

    Do you provide on-site commissioning?

Yes, for large-scale projects we can send engineers for on-site installation and training. Remote video guidance is provided free for all customers.
