Rotary Drum Cooler

The rotary drum cooler is a key cooling equipment in compound fertilizer production lines, typically installed after the rotary drum dryer. It reduces the temperature of hot granules from 60–90°C to near ambient levels, ensuring product stability and preventing caking during storage and transportation. In NPK fertilizer production, proper cooling is essential for maintaining granule strength, appearance, and overall product quality.

    Equipment in Action

In addition to fertilizer production lines, SYM can customize rotary drum coolers for mineral, chemical and other industrial applications based on specific material and process requirements.

    Feature

    Counter-Current Cooling Design
Material and cooling air flow in opposite directions inside the rotary drum cooler, significantly improving heat exchange efficiency. This design ensures more thorough and uniform cooling while reducing energy consumption in the overall process.
    Optimized Flights Structure
The drum is equipped with spiral or staggered lifting flights that continuously lift and disperse the material to form a uniform curtain. This maximizes the contact area between air and particles and eliminates cooling dead zones.
    Low Breakage Operation
Optimized drum speed and inclination angle ensure controlled material movement throughout the cooling process. This reduces particle breakage while maintaining round granule shape and consistent particle size of compound fertilizers.
    Sealed Negative Pressure System
The rotary drum cooler operates under a sealed structure combined with induced draft fans. This effectively reduces dust emission, improves the working environment, and meets environmental protection requirements.

    Structure

    Rotary Drum

The main body consists of a slightly inclined rotating cylinder of thick steel plate, where material flows and exchanges heat with air.

    Drive System

Driven by a motor, reducer, and large rotary cooler gear, ensuring stable and continuous rotation under load.

    Supporting Assembly

Heavy-duty riding rings (tyre) and trunnion wheels support the drum and ensure smooth operation.

    Thrust Roller System

Controls axial movement of the drum and maintains alignment during operation.

    Sealing System

Equipped with rotary cooler seals at both ends to prevent air leakage and dust escape under negative pressure conditions.

    Principle

The rotary drum cooler operates on a counter-current cooling principle. Hot fertilizer granules enter the drum from the higher end, while ambient air flows from the opposite direction.

As the drum rotates, internal flights lift the material to form a uniform curtain, allowing efficient heat exchange between air and particles. The material gradually moves along the inclined drum and cools to near ambient temperature at the outlet.

This process effectively removes residual heat, prevents crystal bridge formation, and ensures the stability of fertilizer granules during storage and handling.

    Application

    Fertilizer Industry

Widely used in NPK fertilizer production lines for cooling compound fertilizer, urea, ammonium phosphate, and organic-inorganic blended fertilizers.
